Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival

October 18, 2009

This festival has been a part of my life since 1978 when it was in its 7th year.  A bunch of friends & I  went in a big RV.  That was long before I got my RV...almost 30 years later.  It was fun then ~~it is still fun!

This year, my sis, my niece and I went to the festival and met with some of her HMB friends.  She lives right down town so this is the first time parking hasn't been an issue.  We also went early in the morning before it got "really" busy.  It was then and continues to be an old-fashioned festival...lots of families and considering the crowds hasn't become too commercialized. I take that back....now you have to pay to have your picture taken with the "BIG" pumpkin.  This years winner came from Des Moines, Iowa and it weighed in at 1,658 pounds.  I didn't pay the 12 bucks for the picture but was able to get these shots.  I handed my camera to a man way up in the line to pay and view and he took this shot for me.
....and here I am with the sign about the payment plan....

This small town of Half Moon Bay in the early 70's was showing signs of deterioration and needed to be revitalized....a good reason to form a committee..right?  Sometimes committees' get it right.  Because people were already coming to the area during pumpkin season, a natural progression was to nab those people.  Hence; come and pick your pumpkin at the many patches...then come downtown to a festival!

"The Pumpkin Festival has done more  for this city, by far, than any other thing in the city's history,'" according to former City Manager Fred Mortensen.  Proceeds increase all the time and the downtown area has flourished and various service organizations benefit greatly from the festival proceeds.

The well-known kickoff to the festival is the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off which is held on Columbus Day every year. The Weigh-Off helps to demonstrate the importance of agriculture to the economy of San Mateo County. Pumpkins weighing more than 1,000 pounds are brought by proud growers and their families each year to the Weigh-Off.

The festival has everything from great foods, entertainment, wine, haunted house, children's activities, pie eating contests, pumpkin carvers, parade, unique arts and crafts, and of course the pumpkin weigh-off.  Oh! and there is also a design the logo contest.  This year I won't forget the  contest winner!  Jess, from Philadelphia, and an architect designed this logo.  An old family friend, Shirley, a HMB resident brought her over to my niece's home....what a delightful and talented young woman!

Oktoberfest at Tyrolean Inn

September 27, 2009

Although I did not go to Munich for their annual Oktoberfest ritual, I certainly felt like I was there.

My sister, Deanie & I travelled just a few miles to reach our Oktoberfest ritual.  The Tyrolean Inn celebrates Oktoberfest every year and each year, it seems to get better.  The setting of the redwoods, the music, the costumes of all staff, the menu, all the decorations make for quite a delightful celebration.

Oktoberfest, for me has always been a great autumn activity.  It tends to get me in a mood for the rest of the holidays up until the new year.  Because I love activities that include all of the family and certainly Oktoberfest, Renaissance Faire  Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year are all about family. Oktoberfest introduces the idea that we can all dance and act like a chicken...watch this video   of Motley Crue (Chicken Dance Video),  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGcdGNlKifY  That's what I'm talking about!

The food selections were wonderful...I had Kabob...assorted sausages, bell peppers and onions.  Deanie had the traditional Gulash...Hungarian beef stew flavored with paprika and peppers, with spatzle.....and then we shared an additional bowl of spatzle.  Our dessert was...........apple strudel.  Blake, our very handsome wait person was oh so attentive.

The Alpine Band was great and so funny and many were dancing.

Below are assorted pictures of the location in the redwoods, the band, some of the guests, the pretzel girls & dancers (they were great), and my long-time good friend, Whitney, co-owner.....

the alpine band cuttin' up!

old friends, Pat & Whitney solving world problems!
and it was all about the beer....I just had one glass/mug/stein/1/2 liter....a great day....

"ein prosit, ein prosit, der gemutlichkeit! ein prosit, ein prosit, der gemutlichkeit! eins, zwei, drei, g'suffa!"

...I think it means "cheers"!

American River Music Festival

September 22, 2009

It was a mix of terrific folk and blues music, family fun, river rafting, riverfront guided hikes, 3 beautiful riverfront campgrounds to park your RV or tent...with evening music on a small venue, workshops, jams, open mic night, live art, food and beverages...and more.  We were gathered on the banks of the South Fork of the American River in Coloma....gold country... for the 3rd annual American River Music Festival.

The weather was hot...close to triple digits....the water was cold....as usual.  My long-time friend, Doreen and I left early on a Friday and returned late on a Sunday.  We left totally spent and inspired from the ambience of the entire weekend.

We parked Phoebe McGee within yards of the river and from where Doreen is standing in the cold river...eating lunch....

Doreen keeping as cool as possible by drinking lots of water and spraying lots of water on her all day.

This live artist worked, creating art, dancing, singing along with the bands both days (break-less) as far as I could tell.
Pat, doing the same thing as Doreen...keeping as cool as possible.

Festival goers dancing on the side and  viewing the art.
This is Brandy, part of a very talented duo called "Twilight Hotel".  They have just moved to Austin and will do well with their smartly crafted songs.  Brandy and Dave are from Winnepeg and have already  landed a Juno nomination for roots and traditional album of the year.  TwilightHotel.CA.com

We shared the big shady tent with our new friends, Peggy & her husband (forgot his name).  They were so much fun.

fires..friends...fun...food...family...forest..back in Santa Cruz

....almost home.....
September 6, 2009
Two hours from Santa Cruz on Pacheco Pass, I bumped into a fire. It hadn't been blazing for too long. Only a few police cars and blocks were in place. Traffic was moving slowly and sometimes not at all.. I had plenty of time to take pictures.  Two hours after we passed,  roads were completely closed down as the fire jumped the roads.
The wind continues to be at my back and that road continues to rise to meet me.  Just the day before, I finally found an authorized dealer to fix my RV...after driving about 400 miles with extreme reduced speed.  Can't remember what was wrong....a hose had split and had to be replaced....almost $400.00...but it's fixed.  There aren't that many authorized dealers for my RV in certain areas of the states...

I was greeted by my sis and a few friends upon arrival and some good food.....of course.  After a couple days at my sissy's, I returned to my RV Resort home in the Redwoods.  With so much to do before I leave for Mexico in November, I've maintained  a surprisingly lazy profile.....way tooooo chill!  Occupying my mind has been...walking my dog with friends and their dogs, catching up with everything Internet,....Sunday I went to church with my granddaughter, then we ate at Chili's.....hadn't seen her in a year.  Nice day.  Today, Labor Day, went to a party with lots of margarita's and great fruit salads and finger foods.  Fun people.  Tomorrow is a new day of getting organized......

These are pictures of my home in the Santa Cruz area~so peaceful~quiet~calming~conducive to "chillin"!

and here are some friends from the party today
