From Michigan to the Redwood Forest

August 27, 2009

A quick update of life on the road after Michigan...goal was to spend a few days with my good friends, Rosemary and Arn in Kansas City. They were my neighbors for many years in Santa Cruz. They actually met because of me....hopefully they are still happy about that after 14-15 years of marriage. They had just celebrated their anniversary a few days before I got there and of course, we celebrated again. A few relatives came over for a great bar-b-q. It was also the birthday of Woodstock; so we played "Woodstockie" music and Rosemary had her tie-dyed shirt on. Great fun and with mixed emotions. I didn't take pictures.

The last time I was there to visit them .... fall of 07 .... Rosemary had just been diagnosed with cancer. After undergoing all possible treatments the cancer hasn't stopped. It has metastasized and continues destruction of her 6' beautiful body. It hasn't changed her exterior and her psyche has been filled with as much positivity as she can muster for this situation. It has taken her beautiful head of blond hair but she looks great bald and has some extra hair when she chooses. She wasn't feeling well while I was there and actually had to miss a day of work and just hang out in bed...(unusual)!

My next stop was OKlahoma.....the idea was to just show up at my friend Pat's house quite casually. That idea did not turn out OK. What happens when one of your friends buys an RV (they are not where they're supposed to be). I left her several messages with no return call. I stayed about a block from her place in a community RV Park (where I stayed a couple years ago while there.) The next morning I went to the city clerk's office to pay up and she remembered me from before and informed me that Pat was in Florida. The town is very small and everyone knows everyone. Next time, Pat....and I'm sure we will hook-up somewhere on the road in our RV's.

The closer I get to California, the more eager I am to arrive. Especially after the last couple of days.  Something is wrong with my RV....the tank is full but the indicator light is on and on the many hills I was on as I slowly went through Arizona, I discovered I didn't have much power.  The speedometer said I as going 60 mph but I was going about 10-15 mph.  My manual says I need to find a Sprinter dealer and unfortunately there aren't any in this area....I'm now in the Mohave Desert and it is 114 degrees....too hot to even move from the Resort and think about what to do. I have to drag TaZzi out to go to the bathroom...she doesn't do heat well, either.  I will think about all this tomorrow morning and get to an RV repair service (unauthorized dealer) as quickly as possible as I continue this last leg of my drive....for a couple months.

The RV Resort where I am is on the beautiful Colorado River and most of the sites are riverfront overlooking a sandy beach. The only people having any fun or the only ones that are even outside are the boaters. There are lots of boats and skiers and that's the only place to be this time of year. The North Shore Resort is one of my 8 "home" parks....part of my membership with Colorado River Adventures....so I do stay free. I look forward to coming back here in the winter months....if for some reason I don't go to Mexico one year....perhaps when I'm 90 and have lost a bit of my "adventurous" bug to hug that tiny Baja road.

Soooo....there you have it....a pretty uneventful update.  More from California in between cataract surgery, mammogram, teeth cleaning, getting my Mexican insurance and preparing for the Baja again.  Hope to leave in November....and probably return to Santa Cruz in March.

p.s. a diversion....my RV got worse....I sit in Victorville at an RV Park Thursday evening. Friday am I have an appointment with an authorized Sprinter dealer to fix it...hopefully....gotta get out of this heat...a heat alert for tomorrow .... 118 degrees. TaZzi and I can't take that!

Bird Lake at the Shay's

August 7, 2009

....And that is all that is needed....when you have friends like Duane and Alice. We had two wonderful memory-making days. I've known Duane since 4th grade and he, Alice, Duane's mama, TaZzi, and I 'kicked it up' at their cottage at Bird Lake, near Hudson, Michigan. We took the pontoon out on an absolutely heavenly evening, ate (too much) at a family-style restaurant, rodded around the lake in the "gator". TaZzi really loved that....so did I!

The next day, we took the gator over to Sherry's Animal Farm. She has an assortment of over 200 animals ranging from llama's to the tiniest kitty (named Velcro). Velcro (unafraid) followed all of us around the huge farm as we fed and had fun with all the beautiful critters. I felt like the patron saint....St. Francis of Assisi for a while.

We also had time to visit with Duane's sister and her husband. Son Scott stopped over and we grabbed deli sandwiches and headed for the opening of the new Firekeepers Casino near Battle Creek. Gambled for a couple hours until my lungs filled with too much smoke and we all left ahead of the game.....but for Duane... sigh!

Duane and Alice for many years have been on Litter Patrol at their peaceful and beautiful lake. They do it for the environment and ... because they are the most wonderful people I know...and because litter exists! Last year there was a full page newspaper article about the details of what they do with lots of pictures. This is their official license plate for Gator.

Meet Priscilla, the duck that's been hanging with Alice and Duane for many years. She and TaZzi got along quite well.....after their initial meeting....Priscilla had to show TaZ who really rules!

TaZzi on the pontoon...just watching the water....she doesn't like to swim, so no chance of her diving off.

Pat and TaZzi take to the wheel...watch out!

Our day at Sherry's Happy Animal Farm

Smile Pretty!

Duane...Sherry....Alice....

St. Patty of Assisi...... where is MY halo???!!!

And it ends with a horse kiss....camera shot didn't get the actual KISS! It was good!

50th High School Reunion

August 3, 2009

The anticipation is over! All went well....great turnout....never have enough time to talk to all; but did see some classmates I hadn't seen in over 50 years. I'll just post a few pictures....I took over 50 and hope I get to see some of the ones other classmates took.....I sure saw lots of cameras going off...so there must be more....somewhere!

That's it until probably 2014....55th? Getting ready to move on now...a few more friends to see before I leave Michigan...then heading to Kansas City, Arizona, then California (for a couple months) before I leave for the Baja for the winter.

Keeping Culture Alive~Everywhere

July 25, 2009

Returned to the beautiful Au Sable River cabin up north for the 4th and beyond .... this time with a different group...Jim, Cindi, Rick, Kim, their boys, Zack & Jake, and Carolyn, (Jim's sister from Hawaii) and the picture taker and blogger and traveler....that would be ME!

I decided to take a road trip while close to the upper Peninsula without a destination in mind.....my mind took me to Cadillac to see if I could find my aunt....she had just moved there and I didn't have her address or phone number... so I didn't find her. I then aimed Phoebe McGee(my RV) northwest toward Traverse City~ much to my delight! I had never been there!

Traverse City is located on Grand Traverse Bay between the little finger and the ring finger....on the map. It has miles of beautiful lakes and bays, lots of wineries, shopping, golfing, outdoor activities and the downtown is quaint. And in July, while I was there, the was happening. I actually found a parking place and the weather was perfect...70's...so not too hot.

The Sand Dunes are breath-taking! And so is the bay!

I stayed at a beautiful KOA Park while there. The park was filled with lots of happy families there for the 4th and the Cherry Festival.

The only logical destination had to be Petoskey and Little Traverse Bay. There are a few old towns in the bay...Bay Harbor....Harbor Springs....Bay View.....all of which are pretty "monied"....is that a word? Petoskey, for me, is most appealing. I would love to be up there in the fall to see the gorgeous colors.

I think this is Petoskey but I can't remember.

When I realized I was only about 25 miles from the Straits of Mackinac .... that's where I headed. My usual stop is to take a ferry to Mackinac Island from Mackinaw City but since no cars are allowed on the island, I just stayed in Mackinaw City for the night and the next day drove over the bridge.

I was careful taking this picture.

I was going to get to Sault Ste Marie, visit, and then go back to the cabin but.... the winds kicked up so I decided to stay one more night up north. That bridge can get scary in the high winds. Sister City Sault Ste Marie, Ontario and SSM, Michigan are joined by the International Bridge...that one I didn't take. My GPS led me to an RV Park and Indian Casino called Kewadin. It was quite lovely; however, I did not go to the casino. Met some very nice RVer's and chatted a bit.

Next morning headed back to the cabin. Lots of fishing, eating, drinking, walking, reading....going on and a different movie every night, a wedding anniversary to celebrate (Cindi & Jim's). That celebration happened at an upscale family-style fried chicken place....all you can eat! We all regretted that one...good as my mama's! almost!

Before we left the cabin, we hiked to the Secret Special Forest....below are some pictures that include Cindi, Jim, Rick (son), Zack & Jake (grandkids) and me...oh & TaZzi. Such a peaceful & restful & tranquil place.

The next day we headed back to their home in Bloomfield Hills and continued our memorable time together....shopping...antiquing....eating out....remembering!

On to Ann Arbor...when I'm there, I stay with my "was-band", his wife and see lots of extended family. I was so lucky that the Ann Arbor Art Fair was going on (their 50th). I hadn't been in at least 40 years....Ruthie, Kendra, Chava and I went opening evening. Various pics of the fair I have posted below.

I had to do a drive-by while in Ann Arbor to see my old home (if walls could talk) It's still there looking 40 years older.....just like me.

For the past week, other than a get-to-gether with cousins, I have been taking some much needed R & R aka Lazy-time.....My long awaited 50th reunion is next week and I'm excited about that. Still just have a few more people to see ..... then it's to the west.....Kansas~Colorado~Arizona~then California...THE END!
